Anthony Anderson's mother to cut acceptance speech at this year's Emmys

The dilemma that awards ceremonies always face is how to keep the show moving along while allowing each winner enough time to give a speech. It's a thankless task for the show's producers, who risk offending those who give lengthy speeches (or their fan base on Twitter.) At the 2024 Emmy Awards, host Anthony Anderson was able to let the winners know that they were loved, while ensuring that they brought in innovative solutions to summarize.

Early in the show, the "Black~ish" actor announced that Bowman would monitor the speeches in the audience and cut the overdue winners. Viewers got to see Jennifer Coolidge in action when she won her second Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for "The White Lotus" Season 2. That's when Jennifer Coolidge won her second Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for "The White Lotus" Season 2. After about halfway through the actress's (again iconic) speech, Bowman left his seat with a handwritten sign.

When Coolidge bought time for just one more word, Bowman calmly but firmly told the winner.

Of course, Twitter (a.k.a. X) is already exchanging opinions on how to do this, with some favoring it and others calling it cringe-worthy and disrespectful (it may lose favor with viewers all night, both for the winner and for Bowman himself). However, since only the first hour has passed, it would be a new and fun addition to the program. (John Oliver added the requisite bit of hilarity when, at Bowman's urging, he began reading out the names of the entire Liverpool soccer team.)

In any case, this bit follows the tradition of Bowman's involvement with many of his son's projects, from Anderson's previous hosting duties to the game show We Are Family. Prior to tonight's ceremony, Emmy producer Dionne Harmon spoke to Variety about adding the show's first "playoff mom."

"The worst part of the awards ceremony is having to cut people's speeches," Harmon said. 'So Anthony's mom is going to help us. Anthony's mom is going to help me. She's like, 'I've got to get this done. She's excited about it, and I think it's going to be interesting, which I've never seen before at an awards ceremony like this."
